How to use the Image Resizer & Cropper

  1. 1Drop a photo (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC where your browser supports it) or choose one from your phone.
  2. 2Pick a preset such as Passport photo, Signature, Instagram square or Full HD - or type your own width and height. Drag the crop box if you want a different part of the picture.
  3. 3Set a target size in KB if a form asks for one, choose JPG, PNG or WebP, then press Resize and download the result.

Resizing, cropping and compressing photos: a practical guide

Every website, college portal and chat app has its own idea of the right picture size. This guide explains how pixels, file size and cropping relate, so you can make a picture fit the rules in one go and still look good.

Common uses

Application forms and exam portals

Portals often ask for a photo of 3.5 x 4.5 cm under 50 KB and a signature under 20 KB. Choose the preset, crop to the face, set the target KB and download.

Profile pictures

Crop to a square so a face is not cut off by the round frame many apps apply, then resize to 400 or 800 pixels.

Websites and blogs

A 12-megapixel photo is far too large for a web page. Resize to the display width (for example 1200 px) and export as WebP or JPG.

E-mail and chat

Reduce a picture to a few hundred KB so it sends quickly on mobile data and does not get recompressed badly by the app.

Social media

Use the square, portrait and landscape presets to avoid automatic cropping that cuts off heads or text.

Documents

Shrink scanned ID pictures or certificate photos before attaching them to an online application.

Pixels versus file size

Pixels describe how big the picture is (for example 1200 x 800). File size in KB describes how much storage it needs. A smaller pixel size usually means a smaller file, but quality settings and picture content matter too: a detailed photo takes more space than a plain one.

How target-size compression works

The tool encodes the picture at high quality, checks the size, and lowers the quality in small steps until the result is under your limit. If lowering quality alone is not enough, it reduces the pixel size slightly. The preview shows the real file size before you download.

Cropping before resizing

Crop first to remove empty space, then resize. A tighter crop keeps important details bigger at the same pixel count, which looks better and compresses better.

Choosing a format

JPG is the safest choice for photographs. PNG is lossless, best for text, screenshots and logos. WebP makes the smallest files for the web, but some older portals do not accept it, so use JPG for official uploads.

Orientation and EXIF

Phones store rotation as hidden data. The tool applies it, so a portrait photo does not turn sideways, and it removes location data from the downloaded copy.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser. The picture is not uploaded, so ID photos and family pictures stay on your device.

Troubleshooting

The file is still over the limit

Choose JPG, lower the pixel size a little (for example 600 x 800), or use a plain background; busy backgrounds compress poorly.

The picture looks blurry

You asked for a very small file. Increase the KB target or the pixel size, and avoid enlarging a small picture - enlarging cannot add detail.

The portal rejects my file

Check the required format (often JPG), the exact pixel dimensions and the maximum size. Some portals also reject files with unusual names; use simple letters and numbers.

Available in 55 languages

The whole site - menus, buttons, guides and messages - can be switched to 55 languages, including English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia, Assamese, Nepali, Urdu, Arabic, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Use the language menu in the top bar; your choice is remembered, and the file formats and tools work exactly the same in every language.

Tips and good to know

How do I get a photo under 50 KB or 100 KB?

Choose the target size in KB, keep the output as JPG, and press Resize. The tool lowers the quality in small steps and, if needed, the pixel size, until the file fits. A passport-style face photo at 3.5 x 4.5 cm normally fits comfortably under 50 KB.

What is the difference between resizing and compressing?

Resizing changes the number of pixels (the picture gets smaller on screen). Compressing keeps the pixels and stores them more cleverly. For tight limits the best result usually comes from doing both, which is what the target-size option does.

Which format should I choose?

JPG for photographs and for most government and college portals. PNG for logos, screenshots and pictures with text or transparency. WebP for websites where you want the smallest file.

Why does my photo look stretched?

Keep the lock on so width and height change together, or crop to the right ratio first. Changing only one side of a picture without cropping distorts it.

Are the sizes official requirements?

The presets are common sizes, not official rules. Always check the exact width, height, format and file size on the website or form you are submitting to.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. This tool works inside your browser with your device's own processing power, so the picture never leaves your phone or computer.

Can I resize several photos at once?

Drop them one after another - each is processed in your browser in a moment. For large batches in other formats use the Image Converter, then the File Size Reducer.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Choose a photo from the gallery or camera, adjust the crop with your finger, and download the result to your phone.

What is the maximum picture size?

Anything your device can open. Very large camera photos are scaled safely in the browser, and the tool warns you if a picture is too large for your device's memory.

Where 20 KB is asked for

Signatures and thumb impressions on exam, scholarship and recruitment portals are often limited to 10-20 KB, and some ask the same for the photograph. A phone picture is hundreds of times larger, so both the pixel size and the quality have to come down.

Getting a clean 20 KB result

Crop tightly first: a signature should fill the frame, a photo should show the face and shoulders only. Then set a small pixel size such as 140 x 60 for signatures or 200 x 230 for photos - small pictures reach 20 KB without visible blocks.

What the tool changes

It tries the highest JPG quality first and lowers it step by step until the file fits. Only if that is not enough does it reduce the dimensions a little, and it tells you exactly what was changed.

Frequently asked questions

My signature looks grey and blurry - why?

Photograph it on white paper in daylight, crop away the paper, and use a smaller pixel size. Grey shadows cost bytes and look fuzzy when squeezed.

Is the picture uploaded?

No. The compression runs in your browser on your own device.

Can I get exactly 20 KB?

You get the largest file that stays under 20 KB, so it is accepted by limits like 'maximum 20 KB'.
