How to make a passport or ID photo at home that prints at the right size
A passport photo has to be the right physical size, correctly framed and printed without scaling. This tool does the sizing and sheet layout; this page explains how to take and print a photo that offices will accept.
Common uses
Passport and visa applications
Crop to the size your office asks for, such as 35 x 45 mm or 2 x 2 inch, and print a sheet of copies.
College, exam and job forms
Many forms need several identical small photos. One A4 sheet gives you 8 to 12 copies for a few rupees at a print shop.
ID cards and library cards
Print small 25 x 35 mm or 30 x 40 mm pictures for school and club cards.
Driving licence and government schemes
Prepare a clean photo and the matching digital copy in one place.
Family documents
Print copies for several family members from the same session instead of paying studio rates each time.
Emergency copies
Keep a PDF of a correctly sized sheet on your phone so you can print extra copies when a form suddenly needs them.
Taking a good photo
Stand facing a window or use even daylight, in front of a plain white or light wall. Keep your head level, mouth closed, eyes open and visible, and ears uncovered if your document requires it. Avoid shadows on the face and behind the head.
Framing
The head should fill about 70 to 80 percent of the picture height, centred, with a little space above. Use the face guides while you zoom and pan; the exact proportions differ by country, so follow the official instruction.
Resolution and printing
The sheet is built at 300 dpi at the true physical size. Print it at 100% scale (actual size) on glossy or matte photo paper, then cut along the marks.
Paper and layout
A4 holds about 8 to 12 passport-size pictures depending on the size; 4 x 6 inch holds 6 photos of 2 x 2 inch. Spacing and cut marks are added so you can cut easily.
Smart edits
On-device AI can replace the background with a plain colour, dress you in one of 16 formal outfits fitted to your shoulders, and enhance light, colour and sharpness. Face and hair are never painted over. Keep edits natural: some authorities reject digitally altered photos, so check their rules.
What this tool does not do
It does not change your face or verify that a photo meets a particular country's rules. Compare your result with the authority's sample before printing many copies.
Privacy
Your photo is processed in the browser and is never sent to a server - important for ID pictures.
Troubleshooting
The print is the wrong size
Your printer or viewer scaled it. Choose 'Actual size' or '100%' and turn off 'Fit to page'.
The background looks grey
Use more even light in front of you and avoid shadows. A plain white wall lit from the front works best.
My head looks too small or too large
Zoom until the head height matches the guide, then centre it with the pan controls.

Tips and good to know
How should I take the photo?
Use daylight from a window in front of you, stand 1 to 1.5 metres from a plain light wall, keep your face straight and neutral, with both ears visible and no shadows. Ask someone to take it at eye level.
How do I print it at the right size?
Open the downloaded PDF or JPG and print it at 100% or 'actual size', not 'fit to page'. If a print dialog scales it, the photo will come out the wrong size.
Which size does my country use?
India commonly uses 35 x 45 mm for passports and 2 x 2 inch for the US visa. Requirements differ by document and can change, so check the instructions of the office you are applying to.
Can this tool change my background?
Yes. Pick a colour under Smart edits and the AI separates you from the background and fills it with clean white, light blue, red or any colour you choose. A plain wall still gives the sharpest hair edges.
How do I add a suit or blazer?
Under Formal dress choose Men, Women or Kids and tap a dress. It is fitted to your shoulders automatically; if the collar sits too high or low, use the Collar height and Dress size sliders. Front-facing photos with visible shoulders work best.
Frequently asked questions
Is the photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Cropping, the sheet layout, background change, dresses and enhance all run in your browser (the AI model is downloaded once, about 25 MB), so your face picture stays on your device.
Are edited photos accepted for passports?
Rules differ. Many offices accept a plain background and formal look, but some do not allow digitally changed clothing or retouching. Check your authority's rules; when in doubt use only the crop and a real plain background.
Will the result be accepted for my passport or visa?
The tool gives you the correct physical size and layout. Each authority also has rules about the background, expression, glasses and head size, so compare your photo with their guide before you print.
What resolution is the output?
The sheet is created at 300 dpi, which is the usual standard for photo printing.
Can I print it at a shop?
Yes. Save the JPG to your phone and give it to any photo studio, or print the PDF yourself on photo paper.
