PDF to Word: getting editable text out of a PDF, and what to expect
PDFs are made for reading and printing, not editing. This converter pulls the text out of a PDF into a Word document so you can edit, quote or translate it. Here is what it does well, what it does not, and how to get the best result.
Common uses
Edit a letter or contract draft
Extract the words of a received PDF and revise them in Word.
Quote and research
Copy accurate passages from reports and papers into your notes.
Translate documents
Feed the text into a translator or a translation workflow.
Scanned documents
Recognise text from scanned pages in Hindi, English and other languages.
Reuse content
Pull the text from an old brochure or manual to make an updated version.
Accessibility
Produce plain, reflowable text that screen readers and font-size changes handle better than a fixed PDF layout.
What you get
A .docx that looks like the PDF: the same fonts, sizes and colours, headings, lists, real Word tables, pictures, columns, headers and footers - as normal editable text, not text boxes. It opens in Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice.
What may need a touch-up
Text over pictures, rotated text, tables without lines and fonts your computer does not have can need small fixes. Charts and drawings arrive as pictures.
Scanned PDFs
Pages without a text layer are read with OCR, up to 60 pages per file, and come out as editable paragraphs. Always proofread numbers and names.
Page ranges
Convert only the pages you need to save time, for example 3-9.
Quality tips
Digital PDFs convert almost perfectly. For scans, use 200-300 dpi, straight pages and the correct language.
Privacy
The PDF is deleted immediately after conversion. Nothing is stored.
Troubleshooting
No text was found
The PDF is probably a scan. Turn on text recognition and pick the document language.
A line wraps differently
Word measures text slightly differently from the PDF; a word may move to the next line. The content is all there.
Special characters look wrong
Some PDFs use custom fonts without proper text mapping. Try the Image to Text tool with the same file.
Available in 55 languages
The whole site - menus, buttons, guides and messages - can be switched to 55 languages, including English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia, Assamese, Nepali, Urdu, Arabic, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Use the language menu in the top bar; your choice is remembered, and the file formats and tools work exactly the same in every language.

Tips and good to know
What does this converter keep?
Text with its fonts, sizes, bold, italic and colours; headings; alignment and indents; bullet and numbered lists; tables drawn with lines (as real Word tables, merged and shaded cells included); pictures; two-column pages; headers and footers; the page size and margins.
What may need a touch-up?
Very complex designs - text placed over pictures, rotated text, tables without any lines, or unusual fonts your computer does not have - can need small fixes in Word. Charts and drawings come across as pictures, not editable charts.
My scan came out with mistakes
Check that you chose the correct language, and use a scan of 200-300 dpi. Proofread names, numbers and dates, because OCR can misread small print.
Can it convert PDF to Excel?
Not as a table-preserving conversion. For tables, use Image to Text or this tool to get the text, then paste it into a spreadsheet and split the columns.
Frequently asked questions
Is PDF to Word free?
Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Yes. Pages that are pictures are recognised with OCR (up to 60 such pages per file) and come out as editable text; pages with real text keep their layout.
Will the document look the same?
For normal documents - letters, reports, notices, forms, books - it looks very close to the PDF and stays fully editable. Word lays out text with its own spacing, so a line may occasionally wrap one word earlier or later.
What is the file limit?
Up to 200 MB and 300 pages per PDF.
