QR codes explained: what to encode and how to make them scan every time
A QR code is a picture that stores a short piece of information - a link, a Wi-Fi login or a contact - so a phone camera can read it instantly. This guide shows what you can encode and how to make a code that scans reliably.
Common uses
Share a website or social profile
Put a link on a visiting card, shop window, brochure or invoice so people open it with one scan.
Wi-Fi for guests
Print a code that lets visitors join your network without typing a long password.
Contact cards
Store your name, phone, e-mail and address as a vCard that saves straight into the phone's contacts.
UPI payments
Create a payment link with your UPI ID and an optional amount for a shop counter or invoice.
Menus, events and tickets
Link to a PDF menu, a registration form or a map location.
Quick messages
Pre-fill an e-mail, an SMS or a phone call so scanning starts the action.
Static codes
A static QR code contains the information itself, so it never expires, needs no account and cannot be switched off. The trade-off is that you cannot change a printed code - make a new one if the link changes.
Contrast and quiet zone
Scanners need strong contrast and an empty margin (the quiet zone) around the code. Use a dark code on a light background and keep the margin the tool provides.
Error correction levels
L restores about 7% of damage, M about 15%, Q about 25% and H about 30%. Higher levels make denser codes but survive logos, scratches and poor printing.
Size and distance
A code should be about one-tenth of the scanning distance: 2 cm for close reading, 10 cm for about a metre. Always test with a real phone before printing many copies.
PNG or SVG
PNG suits documents, chats and websites. SVG is vector, so it stays razor sharp when printed on banners, packaging or signs.
Privacy and safety
Codes are generated in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to a server. Only scan codes from sources you trust, because a code can hide any link.
Troubleshooting
My phone cannot scan it
Increase the contrast, make the code bigger, avoid glossy reflections, and keep the whole code including its margin visible.
The code looks too dense
Shorten the text or link, or choose a lower error-correction level.
The link changed
Static codes cannot be edited. Generate a new code and replace the printed one.
Available in 55 languages
The whole site - menus, buttons, guides and messages - can be switched to 55 languages, including English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia, Assamese, Nepali, Urdu, Arabic, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Why use TinyFileHub
- Eight types: website link, plain text, Wi-Fi network, contact card (vCard), UPI payment link, email, phone call and SMS
- Static codes: nothing is tracked, hosted or redirected, so the code never expires and never needs a subscription
- Choose foreground and background colours, size and margin
- Four error-correction levels, so a code can still scan with a logo or a scratch on it
- Download as PNG (any size up to 2000 px) or as scalable SVG for printing
- Everything is generated in your browser - what you type is not sent to a server
Tips and good to know
Will the code stop working after some time?
No. This tool makes static QR codes: the information is written directly into the picture. There is no account, no redirect service and no subscription that can expire.
How do I make a Wi-Fi QR code?
Choose Wi-Fi, enter the network name and password, and pick the security type (usually WPA/WPA2). Guests scan it with the phone camera and join without typing the password.
Which colours scan reliably?
Dark code on a light background. Keep strong contrast and avoid inverting the colours or using pale shades, because some scanners cannot read light-on-dark codes.
What size should I print?
At least 2 x 2 cm for close scanning and 10 x 10 cm for posters read from a metre or more. Use the SVG download when you print large so edges stay sharp.
What does error correction do?
Higher levels add redundancy so the code still reads when part of it is covered or damaged, at the cost of a denser pattern. Use High if you place a logo on top.
Frequently asked questions
Is this QR code generator free?
Yes, completely. There is no limit on how many you create, and no watermark.
Can I use the codes commercially?
Yes. QR codes you generate are yours to use on packaging, menus, business cards and posters.
Is my data stored?
No. The code is generated in your browser and nothing you type is sent to our servers.
Can I add a logo?
You can place a logo over the finished code in any design tool. Choose the High error-correction level first so the code remains readable.
