Image formats explained: when to use JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC and PDF

Pictures come in many formats, and each one is good at something different. The Image Converter changes between them in a click, for a single picture or a whole folder, and keeps colours, rotation and animation intact.

Common uses

iPhone photos that will not open

HEIC is efficient but not supported everywhere. Convert to JPG so a Windows PC, a website form or an older app can open it.

Faster websites

WebP and AVIF are typically 25 to 50 percent smaller than JPG at the same quality, which cuts page weight and improves load speed.

Logos and graphics with transparency

Use PNG or WebP to keep a transparent background. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are placed on white.

Camera RAW files

Convert CR2, NEF, ARW or DNG to JPG or TIFF for sharing or for programs that do not read RAW.

Icons and favicons

Make an ICO or ICNS file from a square PNG for Windows, macOS or your website.

Documents and printing

Convert pictures to PDF for submission or printing, or to TIFF for professional print workflows and archives.

JPG, PNG and WebP in one minute

JPG is lossy and ideal for photographs. PNG is lossless and best for screenshots, text and transparency. WebP does both jobs more efficiently and is supported by every modern browser.

AVIF and HEIC

AVIF gives excellent quality at very small sizes and is great for websites. HEIC is what iPhones record by default. Both use modern compression, and you will usually want to convert them to JPG or WebP for compatibility.

Quality, colour and rotation

Photos taken in portrait orientation keep their correct rotation, and embedded colour profiles are preserved so colours do not shift between devices.

Animated pictures

Animated GIF and WebP stay animated when you convert between animation-capable formats.

Batches and large files

Add a whole folder at once. Each picture is converted in parallel with live progress, and big files (up to 200 MB in total) are uploaded in safe pieces.

Privacy

Only images are accepted, no account is needed, and results are deleted two minutes after your download has finished (a result nobody downloads is removed after 30 minutes).

Troubleshooting

My PNG got much bigger as JPG or the reverse

PNG is lossless and is large for photographs; JPG is small for photographs but poor for flat graphics. Pick the format that matches the picture.

The background turned white

The target format has no transparency. Choose PNG, WebP or AVIF to keep it.

A RAW file looks flat

RAW files contain unprocessed data. Edit the converted picture in a photo editor for contrast and colour.

Available in 55 languages

The whole site - menus, buttons, guides and messages - can be switched to 55 languages, including English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia, Assamese, Nepali, Urdu, Arabic, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Use the language menu in the top bar; your choice is remembered, and the file formats and tools work exactly the same in every language.

Tips and good to know

JPG or PNG?

Use JPG for photos (small files). Use PNG for logos, screenshots and anything needing a transparent background.

Why use WEBP?

WEBP is usually 25-35% smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and is supported by all modern browsers - great for websites.

What happens to transparency?

JPG, BMP and some others can't store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white during conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose quality?

Converting to PNG, BMP or TIFF is lossless. JPG and WEBP are lossy but use a high-quality setting.

Can I convert many images together?

Yes, any number of files in one batch, up to 200 MB in total.

Are my images private?

Yes. They are processed automatically and returned to you - we do not store them.

Convert WebP to JPG: what to know

Pictures saved from websites often arrive as WebP, which many editors and upload forms reject. WebP is a modern format from Google that is smaller than JPG and PNG and also supports transparency. JPG is the most widely supported photo format, with small files and adjustable compression.

What changes when you convert WebP to JPG

  • Both WebP and JPG are lossy formats, so converting re-compresses the data once more. Choose the highest quality setting to keep the loss invisible, and keep your original file.
  • WebP can contain transparency, but JPG cannot. Transparent areas are filled with a solid background colour.
  • Expect a larger file. WebP is a more efficient format, so the same picture as JPG typically takes about 1.3 to 2 times the space.

How to convert WebP to JPG

  1. Drop your WebP file(s) onto the upload area, or click it to browse.
  2. JPG is already selected as the output format. Pick a quality level if you want a different balance of size and detail.
  3. Press Convert, then download each JPG file or all of them together as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WebP to JPG converter really free?

Yes. There is no daily limit: convert as many files as you like, up to 200 MB per task (one file or several together), with no sign-up and no watermark.

Will I lose quality when I convert WebP to JPG?

Both WebP and JPG are lossy formats, so converting re-compresses the data once more. Choose the highest quality setting to keep the loss invisible, and keep your original file.

When should I use JPG instead of WebP?

JPG is the most widely supported photo format, with small files and adjustable compression. It is best for photos, web uploads, email and forms. Keep in mind that it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it is re-saved. WebP is a modern format from Google that is smaller than JPG and PNG and also supports transparency, best for websites that want faster pages.

Do you keep my files?

No. Files are processed automatically and returned to you; we do not store them, and we never view or share them.

Can I convert many WebP files at once?

Yes. Drop several WebP files together (or a whole folder) and download the JPG results one by one or as a single ZIP.
